Catherine Horan is currently the Vice President and President Elect of the Connecticut Art Therapy Association and has two Masters Degrees; one in Counseling and the second in Art Therapy.

Catherine’s career as a Psychotherapist specializing in art therapy grew naturally from her passion as an artist, her empathy as a counselor, and the leadership and relationship skills she’s developed as a high-level professional.

Catherine’s studio is a nurturing, supportive, and therapeutic space for both individuals and families who come to her for help with issues in areas ranging from relationships, family, health, life transitions, career and work-life balance. Where a therapists office would generally tote a wall of diplomas and cases of psychology books, the bright, welcoming walls of Catherine’s studio are home to an art therapy directive tree and artwork showcasing the experiences and healing processes of both Catherine and her clients throughout the years of her practice.

After a formative corporate career, which included positions in employee relations counseling, recruitment, training and development, corporate sales, marketing, and human resources at corporations such as Conde Nast Publications, Gucci, New York Presbyterian Hospital, and ITT Sheraton Hotels, Catherine found herself immersed in her lifelong passion for art.

She followed this passion to Italy where she first studied at Cisim International Mosaic School in Ravenna, Italy for a six-week summer course that turned into a three-year course of study and application of this fine art. Once at Cisim the professors asked Catherine to apply to their intensive yearly academic art program and scholarship. Requirements for the scholarship program were; candidates had to be Italian, fluent in Italian and have an art degree from an Italian school. Although she was an American citizen, through talent, hard work and good luck she was awarded a three year scholarship sponsored by the Italian Government and the Region of Emilio Romagno to study classical mosaics and ceramic design at the Albe Steiner School and the Academia Belle Art. Catherine was also afforded the honor of working on civic projects for the city of Ravenna, Italy and with esteemed ceramicist Giovanni Santi, Dean of the International Ceramics School in Faenza Italy. Catherine’s coursework was completed exclusively in Italian, and is the equivalent of an American Masters in Fine Art.

Before opening her own psychotherapy practice, Catherine held counseling and consulting positions at a variety of institutions including counseling internships at Iona College, New Rochelle, NY; Superkids, Ridgefield, CT and  J. B. of Family and Child Services, Goldsmith Adolescent Center - The A.R.T.I.S.T. Program, Hawthorne, NY. She’s incorporated the practice of art therapy with cases involving ADHD,, children on the Autistic spectrum, and traumatized adolescences in lock down facilities.

Catherine’s extensive education in both art and counseling is outdone only by her experience. In addition to completing the American equivalent to the MFA in art in Italy and having distinguished academic residencies at numerous renowned art institutions throughout the world (see below). Catherine holds a BA from New England College in Elementary Education, an MS in counseling from the University of Bridgeport, and an MS degree in Art Therapy from The College of New Rochelle and was selected from a highly-competitive group for the ITT Sheraton Hotels Training Program.
